55x65 Barn - Jonesborough, TN

by Matthew
(Jonesborough, TN)

I am not sure of the exact age of the barn. My family purchased the farm in 1951, but the barn itself appears to be much older. It is approx 55x65 with a hay loft and the remains of an old hay hoist. The inner timbers are hand hewn, drilled, and pegged. There is a corn crib and several stalls also made of antique hand hewn timbers. Not entirely sure of the type(s) of wood, but they appear to be red oak or white oak and some chestnut. The roof structure and two drive bays appear to have been later additions and are made of old 2 X 4's.

The barn was used for hay storage as well as tobacco. There are still tobacco poles hanging in the drive bays. Roof is tin with vintage lightning rods. The outer siding is weathered barn wood, which should be great as repurposed lumber. It was painted at one time, but nearly all of the paint has weathered off. One side of the barn had foundation issues and was repaired. The outer wall was replaced with corrugated metal.

The rear of the barn recently suffered significant storm damage and we would like to have the barn dismantled if given a fair price for the wood. There is also an old chicken coop and a large farm shed on the property.
